About Paul Stillmank
I am a Wisconsin native, naturalist, and photographer with a deep passion for the outdoors. As an angler and traveler, I am drawn to wild places and the stories that emerge where adventure, patience, and the natural world intersect. My work is rooted in time spent along rivers, in mountain valleys, and across remote landscapes: from the streams and wildlands of my home state and the broader Midwest to the rugged American West. These experiences have now led me to Patagonia, with future journeys planned for Iceland, Slovenia, and the high streams of Europe. Fly fishing has taken me to some remarkably beautiful places. Inspiration took over from there. I had to bring these places home with me . . . through pictures.
My passions have continued to deepen through the integration of art, writing, and music. Among my favorite artistic pursuits is fly tying. What draws me most to fly fishing is its remarkable depth. You can explore it at every level, from tying flies, to photographing the insects that inspire them, to even delving into the science of entomology if you like. I like!

So photography, for me, is less about chasing perfect images and more about being fully present in the moment whenever and wherever that moment may occur. Out in nature. Behind a fly tying vise. On the water. Under the water. It all comes down to being mindful and just noticing things. I’m especially inspired by places where landscape, wildlife, and my other pursuits come together. Early mornings on the water patiently observing. Hiking alpine trails and being mindful of everything I see and feel. Times of quiet anticipation like this often precede something remarkable happening.
I’m also deeply interested in the craft behind my images, whether I’m shooting macro images of insects or fly-tying details, documenting a day on the river, or building a visual story from one of my own expeditions. I care about portraying what I am seeing and experiencing with authenticity. The goal is always the same: to create photographs that feel lived-in, honest, and hopefully worth returning to.
This site is a place to share that work - photography rooted in adventure, observation, story-telling, and a lasting respect for the natural world.
